What are balance disorders?

Balance disorders include a large group of conditions that cause problems like dizziness and an unsteady gait (walking pattern).

Many people with balance disorders experience vertigo, a particular type of dizziness that makes it feel like the room is spinning around you. They may also experience disequilibrium — an unsteadiness that often occurs alongside spatial disorientation — as well as lightheadedness or blurry vision.

Balance disorder incidence rises with age, growing particularly common in people over 65. Falls and balance disorders are closely linked, and around half of people older than 75 experience falls every year.

What causes balance disorders?

Among the many issues and conditions associated with balance disorders, several are neurological in origin. Some of the conditions most commonly associated with balance issues are:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Labyrinthitis or other ear infections
  • Vestibular neuronitis
  • Mèniére's disease
  • Migraine with aura
  • Chronic migraines
  • Head injuries
  • Stroke

Any condition or injury that affects your brain or inner ear could lead to a balance disorder. In addition, cardiac and blood vessel issues may cause a balance disorder.

How are balance disorders diagnosed?

NeuroVisionary PLLC uses the most up-to-date diagnostic techniques to evaluate your symptoms and determine the root cause of your balance disorder. You may need blood tests, imaging tests, or electrophysiology tests.

The practice specializes in making a precise, accurate, and timely diagnosis, which in turn ensures you get the balance disorder care that works best.

How are balance disorders treated?

After diagnosis, you receive a customized treatment plan for your particular balance disorder. Many people with balance disorders have additional symptoms due to their underlying condition, and these issues also require treatment.

For example, many people with thyroid eye disease have issues like double vision and droopy eyelids alongside their balance disorder.

Your treatment plan is tailored to address all of your issues as quickly as possible. NeuroVisionary PLLC offers both traditional and innovative new treatments for balance disorders, including options like balance therapy, oral medication, injections, and lifestyle changes.

Additionally, NeuroVisionary PLLC is involved in securing grants to bring leading-edge new extended reality (XR) technology to market.

This project may help bring about early diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease, in which balance problems are often one of the earliest symptoms.

If you’ve seen multiple doctors and specialists who couldn’t explain your frustrating symptoms,  reach out to NeuroVisionary PLLC by calling the office or clicking the online scheduler. Telemedicine appointments are available.
